My eyes were red and swollen<br \/>\nand full of salty dog tears<br \/>\nand the words<\/p>\n<p>caught in my aching throat.<br \/>\nMy heavy breath was visible in the<br \/>\nearly morning cold<\/p>\n<p>of that December morning.<br \/>\n&#8220;Don&#8217;t say goodbye&#8221;, she said&#8230;<br \/>\nBut it was.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leaving Long Beach The yellow sun had risen over Long Beach that cold December morning and I was standing on her green doormat.
